Stine Bosses thoughts on climate change:

In the run up to COP 15 and the negotiations this winter I believe we as a world community are at a crucial junction. We have to choose whether to act globally based on the overwhelming knowledge put before us, or to let shortsighted interests dominate the discourse of climate change. As a general insurer based on being in forefront of hedging risks the latter is hardly a viable alternative.

I believe that we as an industry and insurance as a mechanism play, and increasingly so will play, a crucial role in the development of a greener and more climate friendly society. Being in the business of risk handling we, more than any other businesses have the incentive to work together with governments, customers and other businesses to reduce the risks posed by climate change. Both as a citizen, CEO and chainman of the Danish Insurance Association, I am optimistic in facing the junction ahead - we simply can not afford to look back at “the road not taken”.

As (world) citizens we all have a stake in the future and have to act accordingly both in our private and professional lives. This is my steadfast belief, and commits me as CEO and chainman to arm our organizations with knowledge and competence, as well as ambitions, to tackle the challenges posed by climate change.

As a peace of mind provider our main goal is to safeguard our customer’s peace of mind when facing new and emerging risks. The industry intends to do this through the development of products and services, and by implementing preventive measures in collaboration with our private and commercial customers. Together we both have to mitigate future emissions as well as adapt to the consequences of a changing climate.

The last years TrygVesta, as well as myself, have actively sought to strengthen our competence and know-how on climate change. We’ve participated in the Geneva Associations research project on “Climate change and Insurance”, and have chosen to enroll in the global insurance initiative ClimateWise. The latter to share knowledge and develop strategies together with some of the worlds leading insurers.

To “think globally and act locally” is a fitting slogan concerning climate change. We all live in local communities and the measures necessary to adapt to changing weather, new flood patterns and rising sea levels, have to be done locally. Therefore the industries collaboration with municipalities and regional authorities are crucial to ensure necessary measures being put in place.
