Tangible measures and objectives for Pohjola's climate programme
Measures included in Pohjola's climate programme
Strategic areas
It is possible to impact climate change and this should be done in an integrated way. The areas and consequences of climate change that can be most effectively and most rapidly impacted by the way Pohjola conducts its operations are the following.
Providing insurance cover against road traffic risks and the related claim settlement services form an important part of the comprehensive services provided by Pohjola to both private and corporate customers. By rationalising driving and emphasising a more economic driving style it is possible to achieve synergy effects where risks and emissions are concerned.
In its claim settlement services, Pohjola fulfils its customer promise in a tangible way. Payment of compensation and related services produced by partners provide opportunities for Pohjola to influence the risk behaviour of its customers and their attitude to risks through its expertise and activities. The concrete choices made in claims settlement can have a reducing effect on climate change. The choices made also strengthen Pohjola's corporate image and have a direct impact on our customers and on the development of the services produced by our partners.
Real estate constitutes an important part of our customers' wealth and, consequently, providing insurance cover for properties forms a significant part of Pohjola's business operations. Improving the energy efficiency of Finnish buildings is one of the most important means of reducing greenhouse gas emissions and it concerns us all. Extreme weather conditions, increasing flooding of towns, changing construction conditions etc. lead to changes in the risks involved in construction and risks related to buildings, while the need for renovation of older buildings and demand for better insulation is steadily growing.
Pohjola wishes to support sensible ways of building, renovation of properties and good use of real estate by producing information as well as insurance and financing services to be used in preventive risk management.
Responsibility
In order to reduce greenhouse gas admissions, Pohjola furthers the use of online services in all its business areas. Operations are measured by monitoring e.g. the following key figures:
- number of mailings per customer
- number on online transactions
Responsibility processes within the company
In order to reduce greenhouse gas admissions, Pohjola is developing all its business areas by focusing particularly on the energy efficiency of the company's properties, energy effective office routines, travel to and from work and the number of business trips undertaken. WWF''s Green Office programme is one important way of working towards this goal.
Operations are measured on a regular basis e.g. by focusing on the following key figures:
- electricity consumption per person
- office paper consumption per person
- number of kilometres of work-related driving
- number of business trips
- company car emissions (in accordance with OP-Pohjola Group Central Cooperative's tightening practice concerning emissions)
Pohjola seeks to enhance the use of teleconferences instead of business trips and to increase the possibility of remote working.
Pohjola supports the choices made by its own staff to restrain climate change (a comprehensive intranet):
- using public transport for going to/from work
- cycling to/from work
- ride sharing and car pools
- a practical approach to communication related to climate change.
