The insurance and pension industry's ability to manage risk on behalf of businesses and individuals, including long-term threats such as climate change, depends increasingly on the industry's willingness to reflect on the consequences of climate change in every aspect and plan how to deal with the risks that have a significant impact and influence on the long-term stability of the economy.
The diverse nature of our industry means that each organization will have to find its own way of taking action, but we can come together in discussing the challenges and opportunities arising from climate change and in some aspects work together to solve the problems.
The task of the two workshops is to identify challenges and opportunities of the Nordic insurance and pension industry. The result of the two workshops is a catalogue of tangible suggestions on which the industry can act.

Workshop 1 - Investments in a climate of change
It is necessary to focus on climate change as an issue of general interest to companies which will – in various ways – affect their way of doing business.
Behind companies are institutional investors looking for risks and opportunities to pursue their goal of offering finance to the business society for the benefit of pension savings. These investors will need to investigate how to incorporate climate change issues in their investment decisions. The workshop will deal with various elements of investments related to climate change challenges:
- Analyzing and reducing risk caused by climate change and incorporating climate change risk in investment strategies
- Engaging in public policy debate and in partnerships with public authorities
- Engaging companies to act on climate change
Workshop 2 - Insurance in a climate of change
It is said that if the insurance industry is to contribute significantly to reducing CO2 emissions, it must be by adapting their business model to the realities of climate change, i.e. through products and services.
To insurers climate change is a versatile and complicated problem. The workshop will deal with a selected number of these:
- Analyzing and reducing risk caused by climate change and incorporating climate change risk in business strategies
- Engaging customers and suppliers in acting on climate change
- Engaging in public policy debate and in partnerships with public authorities
- Reducing the industry's own impact on the environment
